
LEVELS OF LEARNING
Bharatanatyam is an Indian art form with considerable depth and scope. It can take a lifetime to master this art. A Bharatanatyam dancer goes through various stages or milestones to attain a level of expertise. My goal at Lasya Ranjini is to help a student to attain the desired level of expertise by laying a path of progression.

Beginner Level 1

Basic exercises and body movements

Shlokas -recitation with movements

Adavus – first 7 step routines with 5-6 variations in each, danced in all 3 speeds

Adavus – more complex adavus with 5-6 variations, danced in all 3 speeds

At the Beginner level, the students will be given opportunities to perform based on student’s commitment and in class performance skill.
Intermediate Level 1

Continue learning Invocatory pieces

Identify the ragas and talas of the items learned

Recite the item with corresponding talas.

Theory classes will be taken separately from this level.

Students are given opportunities to perform the pieces at various events.
Intermediate Level 2

Continue learning invocatory pieces

Introduction to Abhinaya thru shabdam, keerthanams

Learning to recite the talas and shollukattus of the korvais in jatiswara

Theory classes will be taken separately.
Students are given opportunities to perform and compete at events.
​All students at the intermediate level will be expected to perform at temple events and school organized events.
Advanced level 1

Learn all the first half of the Margam repertoire – (Pushpanjali, Thodaya Mangalam, Jatiswaram, Keerthanam, Varnam and padam)

Basic rendition of shollukattu of all the items and learn to script it based on the talas
